A soft, warm-woody essential oil with a mild balsamic character, Copaïba opens with a mild, honey-like-balsamic sweetness that quickly transitions into a soft woody heart. The scent is not sharp or dominant, but rather creamy, warm and soothing.
Underlying nuances are:
- Woody – soft, round, slightly resinous
- Balsamic – warm, mildly sweet, almost ambery but more subtle
- Spicy-peppery – a light, dry sharpness that keeps the whole thing alive
- Earth-resinous – a natural, tree resinous depth
The fragrance has fashionable tenacity, but is known for its excellent fixing properties, making other notes last longer.
Use in perfumery
Copaiba Balsam is valued as an affordable natural fixative: it softens sharp edges, rounds out wood and spice accords and helps other fragrance notes stay present longer.
The oil fits particularly well in warm wood compositions, amber accords, fougères and balsamic perfumes.
It is also a popular addition in skin care and aftershaves because of its mild, gentle scent.
- Wood perfumes – gives warmth and roundness
- Violet chords – traditionally used in low-cost violet compositions
- Fougères – softens lavender and connects wood and spice notes
- Amber and balsamic perfumes – enhances the sweet, warm base
- Detergent and industrial perfumes – because of its stability and low price
- Aftershaves and skincare – due to its gentle, non-overpowering fragrance
