Sandalwood Attar

Natural Indian attars are traditional, alcohol-free perfume oils made from botanicals such as flowers, herbs, roots, and resins, distilled in a base of pure sandalwood oil and providing an alcohol-free alternative to conventional perfumes.

Sandalwood Attar is a refined, exotic fragrance that combines tranquility and depth with a warm, woody base.
This attar is traditionally hydrolyzed in pure Indian white sandalwood oil, creating a rich, earthy, amber-like fragrance.
The fragrance opens with a subtle freshness of clean, baked earth and develops into a heart of warm amber, carried by the creamy, woody undertones of sandalwood.
The result is an elegant, long-lasting attar that is perfect for high-quality perfume compositions.

hoe attars worden gemaakt

Traditional with the Deg and Bhapka method

Traditional attars are produced using the Deg and Bhapka method, a two-stage hydrodistillation process in copper stills: a large Deg (degh) and a smaller Bhapka.

In the Deg, botanical materials are boiled with water, after which the aromatic steam is passed through a bamboo tube (Chonga) to the Bhapka, which is filled with base oil such as sandalwood.

The vapour condenses, and after a second distillation with fresh oil, the concentrated attar is produced.

First distillate

In the Bhapka the steam condenses against the cooled metal. The resulting hydrosol forms on top of the base oil. This first distillate produces a fresh, refined fragrance with floral and woody accents.

Second refinement and maturation

The first distillate is redistilled with fresh base oil. This second phase concentrates and deepens the aroma. Afterwards, the concentrated attar oil is transferred into traditional leather bottles and aged in the sun for several days, resulting in a silky, richly rounded fragrance.

How do you use attars?

Direct application to the skin

Apply a very small drop of attar to warm skin areas such as wrists, neck or behind the ears. The concentrated oil diffuses a subtle and long-lasting fragrance. Let the attar soak in for a few seconds before putting on clothes or using other products.

Mixtures and perfume blends

You can mix attars with neutral carrier oils (e.g. jojoba or almond oil) to soften the scent or make the product more economical. Add 1–2 drops of attar per teaspoon of carrier oil and test the ratio on a scent strip or your wrist. Experiment with combinations of different attars to create unique perfume compositions.

Aromatherapy and diffuser

Put 3–5 drops of attar in an aroma diffuser or aroma lamp. The heat or steam distributes the scent evenly throughout the room. Choose scented candles or electric diffusers that are suitable for pure essential oils.

Tips for optimal use

  • Always perform a sensitivity test first by applying 1 drop diluted to a small area of skin.

  • Store attars in dark, airtight bottles at room temperature, out of direct sunlight.

  • Combine attars with light perfume spray for a layered fragrance experience.

  • Adjust the quantity as needed: a few drops can already provide sufficient intensity.

  • Note your favorite mixing ratio for repetition in future perfumes.
