Eastern Sandalwood is the commercial name for essential oil derived from the Santalum album tree, a rare and precious wood from India. Known for its warm, soft, and balsamic scent, this oil has been used in perfumery and aromatherapy for thousands of years.

Please note: other species such as Santalum spicatum (Australian sandalwood) or Amyris balsamifera (West Indian “sandalwood”) or Brachylaena hutchinsii / Brachylaena huillensis (African sandalwood) are botanically and aromatically different.

Sandalwood ( Santalum album ) is one of the most beloved ingredients in perfumery – and that is no coincidence.

Uses of Sandalwood in Perfumery

Role in fragrance compositions

  • Base Note : Sandalwood is a classic base note that adds depth, warmth and longevity to a perfume.
  • Fixative : It helps volatile top notes linger longer, keeping the fragrance better balanced.
  • Team player : Sandalwood blends effortlessly with other ingredients such as musk, jasmine, rose, vetiver and ylang-ylang

Aromatic profile

  • Fragrance type : Creamy, soft, woody, slightly sweet and balsamic – without the sharp edge of other woods.
  • Unisex Appeal : It is used in both feminine and masculine perfumes for its sensual and calming character.
  • Emotional effect : The scent has a calming effect and is often associated with meditation and spiritual depth.

Application in perfumes

  • Natural perfumes : As pure essential oil in niche fragrances.
  • Designer perfumes : Often as part of a synthetic accord that imitates sandalwood.
  • Perfume families : Oriental, woody, floral and even gourmand.
