Scent Profile: Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol has a soft, sweet, rosy-floral aroma with honeyed, slightly green and fresh nuances.
It’s gentle and natural-smelling, often described as the “fresh petal” aspect of rose.

Use in Perfumery:

  • Acts as a heart note and floral modifier
  • Adds naturality and softness to rose, peony, lily of the valley, and carnation accords
  • Common in floral, aldehydic, balsamic, and herbaceous compositions
  • Used in both fine fragrance and functional perfumery (e.g. soaps, shampoos)

Similar Aromachemicals:

  • Phenyl Ethyl Acetate – fruitier, more volatile
  • Phenyl Propyl Alcohol – slightly greener, peony-like
  • Rose oxide – metallic-green rose nuance
  • Geraniol, Citronellol, Nerol – natural rose alcohols with brighter tones
  • Phenethyl Phenylacetate – longer-lasting, richer rosy note

Blends Well With:

  • Rose ketones (e.g. damascenone)
  • Geranium, neroli, jasmine, ylang-ylang
  • Linalool, heliotropin, coumarin, musks
  • Guaiacwood, sandalwood, patchouli
  • Aldehydes – for lift and sparkle

Use in Rose Scents: PEA is a core building block in rose accords. It:

  • Reconstructs the fresh, dewy petal aspect of rose
  • Softens sharper floral notes
  • Bridges between natural rose oils and synthetic components
  • Often used at 5–20% in rose bases

Unlike most fragrances, PEA is partially soluble in (hot) water.
During the distillation of rose species, the largest part of this fragrance is lost. PEA can therefore be used to replenish this fragrance molecule when using natural rose oil.
