Phenolic (AC)

CAS: mix (it mimics the scent profile of phenol)
Phenol has a sweet, strong, phenolic scent often described as medicinal, smoky, or leathery.
In perfumery, it’s used to build dry, smoky accords and leathery compositions.
While intense on its own, in small doses it adds depth and complexity to a fragrance.

This scent pairs best with scent notes that either balance its sharp, smoky character or enhance it in a refined way.

Try:

  • Woody notes like cedarwood or guaiacwood – to amplify the smokiness.
  • Leather accords – phenol is almost essential for that deep, vintage leather vibe.
  • Balsamic or amber notes like labdanum or styrax – to soften the harshness.
  • Floral notes like jasmine or ylang-ylang – for contrast and complexity.
  • Citrus notes – such as bergamot or grapefruit – to brighten and lift the blend.

In addition to the woody, leathery, and amber notes already mentioned, here are more scent materials that pair beautifully with phenol:

  • Tar-like notes such as cade oil or birch tar – enhance the smoky, medicinal vibe.
  • Spicy notes like clove (eugenol) or black pepper – add warmth and depth.
  • Aromatic resins like frankincense or myrrh – bring a mystical, balsamic base.
  • Green notes like galbanum or tomato leaf – create a striking contrast with phenol’s dark tone.
  • Animalic notes like castoreum or civet (synthetic) – amplify the leathery feel and add sensuality.
