Difference between resinoid and essential oil

  • Essential oil : obtained by steam distillation of the resin; scent profile is lighter, fresher, with citrus and terpene accents.
  • Resinoid : Obtained by solvent extraction of the raw resin; fragrance profile is deeper, warmer, more balsamic, and longer lasting in perfumes.

Use in perfumery

  • Role : base note and fixative, gives depth and spiritual warmth to compositions.
  • Fragrance profile : balsamic, spicy, slightly smoky with a citrusy top.
  • Combinations :
    • Florals: rose, jasmine, orange blossom
    • Woody: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver
    • Spicy: myrrh, cardamom, coriander
    • Modern: blends beautifully with amber and musk accords

Solve and process

  • Olibanum resinoid is viscous and does not dissolve well in pure alcohol without pretreatment.
  • Best method: first dissolve in ethanol or DPG (Dipropylene glycol) in a ratio of approx. 1:3 to 1:5.
  • For perfumes: make a tincture or pre-dilution (e.g. 20% resinoid in ethanol) and use this in your formula.
  • Tip: Gently heating (in a bain-marie, max. 40 °C) will speed up the dissolving process.
