Nerol is net als geraniol en citronellol, één van de klassiekers uit de rozen-alcohol-familie. Het wordt aan het einde van de synthese uit myrceen gescheiden van geraniol. Nerol is cis isomer of geraniol; In essential oils it is a minor component that is always accompanied by geraniol.
