Farnesol is a green floral aroma alcohol with typical muguet/linden facets that is used as a fragrance enhancer, noun and diffusion booster in fragrance formulas.

Fragrance profile

  • green, fresh top notes moving towards soft florality;
  • floral heart with typical linden/lily of the valley nuance;
  • undertones of light citrus sweetness and soft, skin-like substantivity that keep the fragrance on the skin longer.

    Farnesol gives an elegant, diffused florality without becoming too powdery or too sharp.

Use in perfumery

  • Role: Enhancer of white flower and muguet accords; mid to base enhancer adding warmth and skin-like substantivity.
  • Effect: Softens sharp aldehydes, increases substantivity on the skin and gives a clear lily of the valley nuance.
  • Typical accords: muguet, linden, jasmine, aldehydic floral compositions, soft chypres and some oriental notes.
  • Combinations: Blends well with aldehydes, linalool-rich notes, benzyl acetate, ionones, and light woods to fix florals.
  • Recommended concentration in perfume: 0.1% – 5% depending on the function; often low as a subtle highlighter, higher as a structural element.
  • Formulation tips: Add mid-blend; may be susceptible to oxidation in very open formulas, so consider antioxidant or protective packaging.

Use in cosmetics

  • Function: fragrance component, odor masking agent, and odor stabilizer; antimicrobial side effect can support formulations.
  • Product types: eau de perfume, eau de toilette, aftershave, body sprays, deodorants, lotions, shampoos and conditioners.
  • Benefits: Enhances floral experience without powderiness; improves fragrance longevity on skin and in products.
  • Formula considerations: Solubility in alcohol and oils is good; concentrations for rinse-off products are usually lower than in leave-on products.
