Dementholization is a process of removing menthol from mint oil . The oil comes from Mentha arvensis (field peppermint).
The result is a milder oil that still smells minty, but without the sharp cooling effect of menthol. How does dementholization work?
- Mentha oil is first distilled from the mint plant
- The crude oil often contains up to 70% menthol
- Freezing causes the menthol to crystallize out
- The crystals are mechanically separated from the liquid
- What remains is crude dementholized mint oil with ±30–56% menthol
Why is this done?
Rode Advantage Too much cooling Milder for skin and mucous membranes Better dosable in perfumes Subtle mint scent without a menthol kick Suitable for sensitive users Less chance of irritation Maintain functional aroma Still fresh and minty Think of the difference between an ice-cold peppermint and a smooth mint infusion: dementholizing makes mint oil more gentle and versatile .
-This oil is widely used in cosmetics, perfumery, foods, and pharmaceutical products where a subtle mint scent is desired without the intense menthol sensation.
-Also suitable for use in nasal spray / nasal inhaler. (1–2 drops on a cotton filter, possibly combined with eucalyptus or lavender)
Because menthol has a strong cooling effect, a reduced level is actually milder and more pleasant for the nose. (for nasal inhalers see: work materials)
