Cyclogalbanate (AC)

Cyclogalbanate is a fragrance with a fresh, green-fruity top (pineapple/apple) and a resinous, galbanum-like heart note. Amplifies middle notes, giving structure and freshness to fougère, chypre and modern floral-fruit compositions.
CAS: 68901-15-5
Also known as: allyl cyclohexyloxyacetate and Galbanum oxyacetate
Fragrance Group: Green
Odor Duration: Medium; the substance has a relatively slow evaporation and acts mainly in the middle phase of a composition
Recommended dosage: 0.1%-0.5% in perfume concentrate; can be applied up to ~2-5% in some applications depending on desired impact and formula balance

Cyclogalbanate is a versatile aroma chemical developed for contemporary perfumery.
It delivers a bright, green freshness with pronounced pineapple/fruit facets and a resinous/galbanum-like bite that gives middle chords more structure and character.

Applications

  • Fougere, chypre, fresh citrus and floral-fruit compositions.
  • As an accent for middle notes and to enhance synthetic or natural galbanum tones.
  • Often used in niche and modern perfumes where a green, slightly tropical nuance is desired.
  • Enhances green and spicy accords, gives a “sunny” effect, and prolongs freshness in perfumes.
  • The cyclic structure * (see tab ‘what does cyclo mean’ for explanation ) ensures good stability and persistence in formulations.

Fragrance profile

  • Top: green, fruity (pineapple, apple).
  • Heart: galbanum-like, resinous, slightly spicy.
  • Base: subtle woody/woody undertone depending on matrix

Combinations and blend tips

  • Works well with: vetiver, patchouli, cedarwood, labdanum, tonka bean, vanilla, peru balsam, tobacco, roasted hazelnut, cistus, coffee.
  • Blend tip: Combine a low dose of cyclogalbanate with a soft vanilla or tonka note and a woody base (vetiver/cedar) to create a warm, modern gourmand fougere.
  • Balance: because it has a distinct green-fruit/galbanum facet, always start with low doses and build up incrementally.

'Cyclo' means the molecule has a ring shape - which gives the fragrance more body and warm, woody notes.

What does cyclo- mean ?

  • Cyclo- = ring. In chemical names, the prefix cyclo- indicates that part of the molecule is arranged in a closed ring, usually a ring of carbon atoms.
  • Examples: cyclopropane, cyclobutane, cyclohexane - the numbers refer to the number of carbon atoms in the ring.

Simple comparison: think of a bracelet (ring) instead of a straight chain - the shape changes how it moves and feels.

Specifically, what does that mean for cyclogalbanate?

  • In the name cyclogalbanate, cyclo- indicates the presence of an annular carbon group (often a cyclohexyl group) attached to the rest of the molecule.
This is a widely used building block in fragrance chemistry and organic synthesis.
  • That ring makes the molecule more rigid and less flexible than a completely straight chain, which can affect odor and evaporation behavior.

Why is this relevant to perfumers?

Molecular form influences odor:
ring structures often give a slightly lower volatility and can contribute to more body, woody or resinous notes in a composition - which is why you see cyclo groups in ingredients that should add warmth and structure.
This follows from the general properties of cyclic compounds.

Practically: if you see an ingredient with cyclo- in the name, you can expect it to be less volatile than similar linear substances and that it can enhance middle or base notes.

Brief overview

  • Cyclo- = annular structure of atoms (mostly carbon)
  • Examples in names: cyclopropane, cyclohexane - indicates number of ring atoms
  • In cyclogalbanate: indicates a cyclic (ring) group such as cyclohexyl; affects odor and volatility
  • Why important: ring structures often give more stability, body and wood/bar properties in perfumes
