Ambreine is derived from a resinoid — specifically labdanum resinoid, extracted from the gum-resin of Cistus ladaniferus. Biolandes applies a proprietary process to further refine this resinoid into Ambreine.

The result is a smoother, more elegant material than standard labdanum absolute or resinoid, with a rich amber, smoky, and balsamic scent profile.

Ambreine is not a single molecule like ambrein (from ambergris), but a complex mixture of aromatic compounds extracted from labdanum resinoid and is a blend of terpenoids, phenols, esters, and aromatic compounds.

Some practical tips for working effectively with Ambreine in perfumery:

  • Dilution: Ambreine is highly potent and viscous. Pre-dilute it in ethanol or DPG (dipropylene glycol) to 10–20% for accurate dosing.
  • Leverage its fixative power: Use it in base notes to extend longevity — it can last up to 400 hours!
  • Build classic accords: Blend with vanillin, coumarin, bergamot, and civet for a traditional ambreine accord. Add patchouli or opoponax for depth.
  • Warm slightly when blending: Its thick texture may benefit from gentle warming (max 40°C) during mixing.
  • Use sparingly: Start with low concentrations (0.5–2%) to avoid overpowering other ingredients.
  • Check IFRA compliance: While Ambreine itself has no restrictions, it contains trace amounts of regulated substances like eugenol — verify your formula.
  • Best suited for oriental and leather fragrances: Perfect for warm, sensual compositions.

Ambreine pairs beautifully with warm, balsamic, woody, and spicy fragrances. Here are some ideal matches:

  • Patchouli & Vetiver – deepen the earthy character
  • Vanilla & Tonka Bean – add sweetness and sensuality
  • Rose & Jasmine – lift the amber accord with floral brightness
  • Sandalwood & Cedarwood – provide a creamy, woody base
  • Spices like clove or cinnamon – enrich the blend with complexity
  • Fragrances: Classics like Shalimar, Obsession, and Must de Cartier feature ambreine-style accords

IFRA status: No direct restrictions, but contains trace amounts of regulated substances like eugenol and benzyl benzoate — check for IFRA compliance.
