Subcritical extraction (Select CO2 extraction) of tuberose is done at low pressure and temperature which better preserves the delicate floral scent.
The resulting oil is close to the essential oil because only the lighter aromatic components are extracted. The extract is oily and less viscous, with a softer, more transparent tuberose profile.
It is used in fine fragrance for its naturalness and dosability.
- Selectivity: only the volatile and medium aroma components are extracted; waxes and heavy resins are largely left behind.
- Result: a pure, oily extract without solvent residues, which faithfully reproduces the scent of the flower.
Fragrance profile of subcritical tuberose extract
- Character: softer and more transparent than absolutes or supercritical extracts.
- Facets: tropical, lactonic, creamy, with fresh floral top notes.
- Comparison: less “narcotic” and heavy than the absolute; retains more vibrant, fresh nuances of the blooming flower.
- Color/consistency: dark amber, oily, good dosage.
Use in perfumery
- Fine fragrance: ideal for perfumes where a natural tuberose accord is desired, without the heavy waxy notes of an absolute.
- Alcohol solutions: readily soluble in ethanol, often immediately usable without filtration.
- Dosage: easier to dose than supercritical extract; is often used diluted (10-20%) for accurate weighing.
- Benefit: Gives perfumers a bright, floral and tropical profile closer to the living flower.
Practical Tips
- Pre-dilute: 10-20% in ethanol , DPG or triethyl citrate (TEC) for linear dosing.
- Storage: store airtight, cool and dark to prevent oxidation of lactones and indoles.
Summary: Subcritical CO₂ extraction of tuberose produces an oily, natural extract with a softer and more transparent fragrance profile than absolutes or supercritical variants.
It is particularly suitable for fine fragrance where finesse and dosage are important.
