Fragrance profile
- Main character: Fresh, spicy, slightly citrusy
- Nuances: Woody, terpenic, with green and slightly smoky undertones
- Associations: Occurs naturally in cajeput, sweet fennel, lime, tea tree and marjoram, among others
Use in perfumery
- Role: Top note, often as a fresh accent in citrus and spicy accords
- Effect: Gives a natural, slightly sparkling freshness and enhances green or spicy themes
- Typical application:
- Citrus and fougère compositions.
- Green and aromatic perfumes
- As a modifier in woody and spicy accords
- Dosage: Often in low percentages (<5%) because of its strong terpene characteristics and possible instability upon oxidation.
Tips for use
- Stability: Terpinolene is susceptible to oxidation → always seal tightly and keep cool.
- Combinations: Works nicely with limonene, α-pinene and linalool to build a complex citrus-woody accord.
