Atranol and chloroatranol are the main reasons for the strict IFRA restrictions on oakmoss oil.
These two substances have been removed by flash fractionation or are present in negligible concentrations.
Flash fractionation, also called flash distillation or vacuum distillation, is a rapid, low-temperature method for separating essential oil components based on their boiling point under reduced pressure. This preserves delicate aromatic compounds and allows heavier, less volatile fractions or unwanted allergens to be efficiently separated.
Flash fractionation is often used in oak moss oil processing to remove or reduce the IFRA-restricted compounds atranol and chloroatranol to negligible concentrations. By distilling out the heavier, allergenic fractions from the oil, an IFRA-compliant oak moss oil is created while retaining the characteristic, mossy aroma.
Oakmoss, also known as Evernia prunastri, is a widely used ingredient in perfumery for its rich, complex, earthy and woody scent and is extracted from the lichen that grows on oak trees in temperate forests around the world.
Here are some ways oakmoss scent is used in perfumes:
Base notes : Oakmoss is often used as a base note in perfumes. It helps the scent last longer and adds depth and complexity to the composition.
Chypre and Fougere Fragrances : Oakmoss is an essential ingredient in chypre and fougere fragrances. It gives these fragrances their characteristic earthy and woody aromas.
Fixative : Oakmoss acts as a fixative, meaning it helps stabilize the volatile top notes of a perfume and make the overall scent last longer.
Combinations : Oakmoss is often combined with other natural scents such as patchouli , bergamot , and lavender to create a harmonious and sophisticated fragrance experience.
Oakmoss is loved for its ability to give a perfume a natural and soothing atmosphere, and it is often used in both men’s and women’s perfumes.
