Isobutyl Quinoline-2, IBQ for short, is a synthetic quinoline derivative widely used in perfumery for its intense leathery, mossy and woody character.

It is especially popular in masculine fragrances and works well in chypre, leathery and woody accords.

Its long-lasting effects and vibrant profile make it a valuable ingredient in creating depth and complexity in perfumes.

Complementary fragrances at IBQ

These materials round out the leather and earth profile, soften the sharp edges or build a classic leather accord.

1. Iso E Super

Gives transparency and modern wood note, softens the bitterness of IBQ.

2. Vetiveryl Acetate

Adds a dry, elegant wood note that blends beautifully with the earthy character.

3. Patchouli (or Patchouli Heart).

Enhances the dark, earthy profile without making it too heavy.

4. Castoreum-like materials (synthetic).

Gives warmth and depth to leather chords.

5. Cistus / Labdanum

Brings amber-leather warmth and makes IBQ rounder and fuller.

6. Cade oil (rectified)

For a smoky nuance that nicely complements the tarry character.

7. Musks (Galaxolide, Habanolide, Helvetolide).

Ensuring completion and portability.

Similar fragrances (same family / vibe)

These materials share IBQ’s leather, tar, tobacco or earthy profile.

1. Pyralone

Softer, rounder, tobacco-leather; less aggressive than IBQ.

2. Quinoline derivatives (e.g., Quinoline 1, Quinoline 2).

Similar chemical family, variations in intensity and bitterness.

3. Kephalis / Ambermax

Dry, woody amber with leathery undertones.

4. Suederal

A modern, soft suede-like leather.

5. Birch tar (rectified)

Smoky, tarry, classic leather – but much less diffuse than IBQ.

6. Styrax

Balsamic leather with a softer, warmer tone.

7. Tobacco absolutes (or synthetic tobacco notes).

Connects nicely with the dark, dry character.
