Vetiver oil from Madagascar is praised in the perfume world for its sophistication and clarity.
Whereas the Indian variety is often heavier, Madagascar offers a “cleaner” and more accessible fragrance experience; slightly softer, warmer and less sharp than vetiver Haiti or Indonesia.

Vetiver is a very precious oil is that must grow for years and requires a complex distillation process.

Based on this particular CoA of this batch, this is a very balanced and “friendly” vetiver.

Chemical values indicate an oil that is less aggressive than average and excellent for fine perfumery.

1. Refined Wood Texture (Khusimol 7.15% & Vetivonen)
With a combined vetivon (Alpha + Beta) content of 8.23% and a solid proportion of Khusimol, this oil has a strong, velvety backbone. It will not “scream,” but provides an elegant, consistent wood scent that remains very stable on the skin.

2. Amber-like Sweetness (Isovalencenol 3.78%)
This is a key value. The relatively high content of Isovalencenol gives this batch a specific amber, almost balsamic sweetness.
This softens vetiver’s typical earthy astringency, making it more “accessible” in unisex compositions.

3. The “Zizanoic” Character (Zizanoic Acid 12.19%).
The high percentage of Zizanoic acid is characteristic of the root. In the scent, this translates to an authentic, deep root scent (think freshly turned earth), but the absence of high concentrations of terpenes keeps this “clean” and not dusty.

4. Subtle Spiciness (Isoeugenol & Benzene Alkyle).
The presence of Isoeugenol (0.74%) imparts an extremely subtle, almost imperceptible carnation or clove nuance. This adds a microscopic layer of warmth to the top of the base note.

Summary

  • Character: Medium-viscous, warm-amber, woody.
  • Fragrance Type: “Clean Earthy” – No heavy smoke or tar, but a focus on sweet wood and roots.
  • Blending potential: Excellent. Due to its relatively low levels of aggressive terpenes (Pinene/Terpinolene), this oil does not disturb the top notes of a perfume.

Note the IFRA Category 4 (Fine Fragrance): you may use this particular batch up to a maximum of 5.5% in your final product (the perfume extract itself).
By the way, given the intensity of this oil, that is more than enough for a powerful base.

Background and Production

Madagascar is a relatively young but important player in the vetiver market, with production taking place on an artisanal scale in regions such as Vohemar.
The rich red tropical soil and abundant sunlight in northern Madagascar provide a high content of sesquiterpenes (such as vetiverol), which are responsible for the calming effect and deep fixation of the fragrance.

Applications

Because this batch has a remarkably high content of Isovalencenol (ambery/sweet) and Zizanoic acid (deep root scent), it lends itself perfectly to a modern-classical composition.

The focus here is on enhancing the “clean” character without losing the earthy depth.

An example of how you could utilize natural amber nuances:

1

  • Top: Bergamot & Pink Pepper (to elevator the 1.01% alpha-Vetispirene freshness).
  • Heart: Clary sage & a touch of Geranium.
  • Base: Vetiver (Madagascar) & Labdanum (to anchor the Isovalencenol ).
  • Result: A warm, golden fragrance that exudes luxury and remains on the skin for a very long time.

One example of how you could capitalize on the 12.10% Zizanoic acid for a hyper-realistic carrot scent, but transparently.

2

  • Top: Grapefruit & Juniper .
  • Heart: Iris (Orris) or Carrot Seed (to mirror the earthy texture of vetiver root).
  • Base: Vetiver (Madagascar) & Iso E Super.
  • Result: A dry, intellectual fragrance reminiscent of a high-end boutique perfume.

Mixing advice

Given the IFRA limit of 5.5% for Category 4, I recommend putting the vetiver in your concentrate (the oil-mix before adding alcohol) at about 15% to 25% of your formula.
When eventually diluting to an Eau de Parfum (e.g., 15% or 20% concentration), you then stay safely within the margins.
How to proceed.
First make a 10% dilution of the vetiver in ethanol or DPG to smell how the Isovalencenol develops after 30 minutes.

Present: COA, SDS, ALLERGENS, IFRA

Here is a balanced starting formula for a modern-classical composition emphasizing the "clean" earthy texture of vetiver Madagascar Bio.

For reproducible results, we work in grams. This ratio is based on a total of 100 grams of concentrate, which you can then dilute in alcohol to the desired strength (e.g., a 15% Eau de Parfum).

Component Gram Function in relation to this vetiver batch
Bergamot (FCF/LMR) 25,0 g Opens the 1.01% alpha-Vetispirene
Pink pepper (CO2 or EO) 10,0 g Gives 'elevator' to the base
Iso E Super 30,0 g Creates space for the Khusimol (7.15%)
Carrot Seed 5,0 g Synergy with the Zizanoic acid (12.19%)
Vetiver (Madagascar) 20,0 g The core: earthy and ambery
Sandalwood (e.g., Spicatum) 8,0 g Strengthens the balsamic Isovalencenol
Ambroxan (e.g., 10% in DPG) 2,0 g Fixes the amber drydown
Total 100,0 g
  • IFRA Check: At 15% dilution in ethanol, your final product contains 3% vetiver oil. IFRA allows 5.5% for Category 4 (Fine Fragrance), so you are safe with this.
  • Allergens: The Isoeugenol in this oil (0.74%) comes out to about 0.14% in this perfume extract. This is well within the margins, but should be stated on a label at the time of sale.

Instructions:

Use a precision scale (at least 0.01g accurate). Because Madagascar vetiver is viscous/thick liquid , you can warm the bottle briefly in a lukewarm water bath to facilitate dosing.
