Geosmin is the magic molecule behind the scent of a summer rain shower on dry ground.
Because pure Geosmine is far too potent for direct use, we also offer ready-to-use 1% dilution in odorless Dipropylene Glycol (DPG).

Ideal for the ambitious perfumer who wants to add a unique, natural “edge” to a composition.
Even at 1%, the fragrance is still very dominant; one drop can transform an entire perfume.

Scent profile 1%: Realistically earthy, fresh, moist nature.
Smell profile 100%: Powerfully earthy, wet soil, petrichor, red beets.

The fragrance experience of Geosmine is one of the most fascinating phenomena in chemistry.

1. The Fragrance Experience: Pure vs. 1% Dilution

Pure (100%): In its pure form, Geosmine is often overwhelming and almost unpleasant. It no longer smells like “fresh rain,” but like a stifling, musty basement or a pile of black garden soil lying in the scorching sun. The fragrance is so saturated that your nose immediately becomes “tired” (olfactory adaptation).

The 1% Dilution: This is where the magic happens. In a 1% dilution (or lower), the fragrance opens up. You can smell the typical petrichor: the fresh, mineral and almost ozone-like scent released when the first drops of rain fall on dusty ground. It is the smell of life, wet pavers and the air after a thunderstorm.

2. The Extreme Strength

Geosmin is known as one of the world’s most potent fragrances:

Detection limit: Humans can detect it at 5 to 10 parts per trillion (ppt). To illustrate, that’s one teaspoon of Geosmine in 200 Olympic pools full of water.

Sensitivity: We are over 1,000 times more sensitive to Geosmin than a shark is to blood in the ocean. The theory is that our ancestors developed this sensitivity to find water sources or fertile soil in dry areas.

3. Use in Perfumery

In a perfume, Geosmin is rarely used as a “main scent,” but as a modifier:

Dosage: Even the 1% dilution is often still too strong for a perfume. Perfumers often use a “trace” (a fraction of a drop) in a composition.
Effect: It gives an ultra-realistic, natural depth to floral scents (such as rose or iris) and is essential for “earthy” or “forest floor” chords.
Well-known examples: Perfumes such as Night Flyer (Olympic Orchids) or certain scents from Demeter Fragrance Library (such as Dirt) lean heavily on this molecule.

Geosmin is a real team player: on its own it may smell like a wet basement, but in a blend it brings other scents to life by giving them a “natural base.”

Some combination suggestions:

1. FLOWERS (especially Rose and Daffodil).

This is a classic trick.
A minuscule amount of geosmin to a Rose accord gives the scent of a rose still standing in the fresh, moist earth. It takes the “synthetic” edge off floral scents.

2. FOREST / FOUGERE (Oakmoss and Lavender).

Geosmin enhances the moist character of Oakmoss. Together with lavender and coumarin (the base of Fougère), you create a scent that smells like a walk in the woods just after a thunderstorm.

3. WOODY (Patchouli and Vetiver)

Patchouli: Geosmin enhances the naturally occurring earthy notes in patchouli oil.
Vetiver: It highlights the rooty, smoky coolness of vetiver. This is the golden combination for a men’s perfume.

4. GREEN (Galbanum and Violet leaf).

When you add geosmin to sharp, green scents, you turn “freshly cut grass” into “deep, damp jungle.”
It gives weight to volatile green molecules.

5. SPICY (Black pepper and coriander)

The combination with Black pepper is very modern.
It provides a contrast between the “hot” of the pepper and the “cool, wet” of the geosmin.

6. AQUATIC (Calone)

Together with aquatic substances (those that smell of the sea or water), you can create a specific “river or lake accord.”
Whereas aquatic substances often smell of salt water, geosmin draws it toward fresh water and muddy shores.

A helpful tip :

You should think of geosmin as “salt in the kitchen”: you don’t taste the salt directly as a separate ingredient, but it makes all the other flavors (scents) come out much more intensely and realistically.

Facts

The camel myth: It is said that camels can smell Geosmine miles away to find an oasis. In return, they spread the spores of the bacteria through their fur and feces.

Red Beets: The distinctive taste of red beets is entirely due to Geosmine. People who do not like beets are often simply very sensitive to this substance.

Fish: Sometimes freshwater fish (such as tilapia) taste like mud. This is because Geosmin accumulates in their adipose tissue. A little lemon juice or vinegar helps neutralize the taste because Geosminol breaks down to the odorless geosminol in an acidic environment.

Perfumer’s Pro-Tip: Create your own Petrichor fragrance.

Want to recreate that hyper-realistic smell of rain on hot asphalt or dry forest floor?
Geosmin is the key.
Combine our Geosmin 1% with Patchouli for depth, and a touch of Calone for the fresh, watery effect.
Note: start with only 1 drop; Geosmin is the “finishing touch” that brings a composition to life!

Why this works:

Patchouli and Geosmin reinforce each other in the “dark” earthy aspect.
The floral/green tones mimic shrubs and trees getting wet.
The aquatic notes keep the whole thing from becoming too “heavy” or “musty,” but rather refreshing like a shower.

TiP: Did you know that Geosmin combined with Iso E Super creates a huge “spacey” effect?
It then seems as if the scent literally fills the room, just as the smell of rain spreads with lightning speed.
